Before Regular Meeting

 

A meeting was held, at Occasions before the regular meeting, of the board of the Burlington Rotary Club and the new District Governor, Mike Conrad, and the Assistant District Governor, Jeff Eldridge.

 

Attendees:  Board Members—Bob Almond, Ken Stafford, Al Spinks, Phil Mann, Allison Wikle, Roy Harris, Pete Pate, Mark Podolle, Barry Weinberg.

Absent: Board Members—No one absent

 

Announcement: President Almond announced that Jeff Clark, Executive Director of Elon University Cultural Program will be joining the Burlington Rotary Club, transferring from the Blowing Rock Rotary Club.

 

Membership: President Almond plans to call a number of former members of the Burlington Rotary Club to see if any can now rejoin the club.  He also plans to call approximately 15 people in the community to let them know about Rotary and see if they are potential members.

 

We currently have 19 active members and 3 honorary members.  President Almond hopes to double the size of the club during his tenure.

 

Mike pointed out that every club he has attended is challenged on membership

 

The clubs are asked to give support to Rotary Foundation.  Mike emphasized members contributing to RI either through their wills, codicils to their wills, or letters of intent.

 

Mike emphasized that he considered it his job to help and advise the individual clubs.

 

President Almond covered our fund raiser in cooperation with Harusaki, a local Japanese restaurant.  [This will be held at lunch, Sep 8.]

 

 

Mike Conrad pointed out that the third annual Ray Taylor Golf Tournament will be held Oct 8 at Grandover.  The club has four members who will play.

 

Mike was asked about the Football Weekend.  He thinks it is the 3rd week in November (21st ??).  Wake Forest will be playing Florida State.

 

Mike was asked about the Polio program.  Bill and Melinda Gates have given $355 Million toward Rotary’s polio eradication program.  In return, RI has committed to raise an additional $200 Million.  Our District has a goal of raising between $50,000 and $75,000.

 

WWII Veterans Program: On Saturday, October 3rd, our Rotary District will sponsor and escort 100 WWII veterans from Greensboro to Washington for a one day trip to visit the WWII Memorial on the Washington Mall.  Cost is $500 per veteran and $200 per volunteer.  Contributions are welcome.

 

2010 District Conference:  The 2010 District Conference will be held at Grove Park Inn in Asheville on Apr 23-25, 2010.  Mike Conrad asked that our club have a presence for the event.

 

The next GSE team will be from Australia.

 

Former Ambassador Scholars are in the area and will be glad to give a program
